San Diego Blood Bank Hits Record Breaking Blood Donations During Comic Con

July 22, 2019

The San Diego Blood Bank collected 3,343 units of blood products at the 43 rd Annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive, breaking last years’ record of 2,804 units and making it the most successful blood drive held at the event to date! The drive, which is hosted every year during Comic-Con, was held Wednesday, July 17 through Sunday, July 21 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Due to popular demand, this was the first year the blood drive was held on preview day.

“Adding preview day to our drive helped us register 400 more donors than last year and collect 20% more blood, shattering our goal of 3,000,” said David Wellis, CEO of the San Diego Blood Bank. “We are truly thankful for our partnership with Comic-Con and to every donor who helped us get our supply to where it needs to be to meet the needs over the summer.”

We got to spend a little time down there over the weekend with Claudine from the SD Blood Bank, talk to someone who is personally connected to the cause, and we also donated! Now, Comic Con Mania is HERE!

All donors received an exclusive Avengers: End Game T-shirt and goodie bag. For those unable to make it to the drive this year, SDBB is hosting “Comic Con Mania” beginning this Tuesday, July 23.

The special shirt will be given to donors who donate at any of the 6 conveniently located SDBB donor centers or mobile drives while supplies last.

To be eligible to donate blood you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds and be in general good health. SDBB is dedicated to community health by providing a reliable supply of blood to patients in need. Our vision is to further ensure the health of our community by simultaneously delivering related health and wellness education and services and extending into research.
